The Little Things

Ask a group of duck hunters what makes a great hunt, and you’ll probably get a different answer from everyone in the blind. Some will say it’s big numbers. Some will say it’s working birds feet-down over the decoys. Others will tell you it’s all about the weather lining up just right.

The truth is, the best hunts are usually built on the little things.

It’s the alarm clock going off before anyone else is awake. It’s loading gear in the dark and hearing the first few jokes of the morning before the coffee has even kicked in. It’s the quiet ride in, knowing the whole day is still ahead of you.

Then there are the sounds you only notice when you’re out there—the splash of decoys hitting the water, distant calls in the dark, the rustle of wings somewhere overhead before sunrise. Those moments never really get old.

Of course, we all love it when the birds cooperate. Watching a flock lock up and finish in the hole is about as good as it gets. But even on slow days, there’s usually something worth remembering. A great sunrise. A dog making a perfect retrieve. A buddy missing an easy shot that’ll get brought up all season.

That’s the beauty of duck hunting. Success isn’t measured by one thing.
